A Hell Of A Pizza Guy

Warren Powell - wanker who works for Hell Pizzas and lost his wallet

Wanker who works for Hell Pizzas, lost his wallet and is a bit lost on “charity”

Warren Powell is a founder and puff executive for New Zealand pizza franchise outfit, Hell Pizzas [sic]. The marketeer has been hauled up in the New Zealand Herald today for refusing to pay a promised 10 grand to a local Telethon. Going back to the Big Night Telethon in 2009 in aid of the KidsCan charity, this charming chap initially agreed that Hell would cough NZD10K “in exchange for exposure” at the Telethon. Powell had promised organisers that Hell staff would make and provide pizzas too, emphasising that all “proceeds from the [pizza] van [would go] to Telethon”. Nowt was coughed up and KidsCan declined to waste money chasing the dosh in Powell’s pockets through the courts.

Not quite the philanthropist, Powell is reported as writing to colleagues, saying …..

“So how does this work ? We gave away pizza by the dozen to these dorks and raised good [sic] knows how much; now am I expected to give them a chq in return for nothing?”

Er, well, yes, Warren, sweetheart. That’s why its called “charity” !

Having sampled Hell Pizzas, I am not a fan but did like the product concept and the way it has been promoted; equally it would be naive to assume that all companies give of their time and money to charity selflessly. Still, Powell pops up here as a rather grasping soul who is no doubt destined to plumb to his corporate namesake come the day of judgement. Tweets following up on the Herald story suggest sour grapes on the part of a disgruntled employee were behind it (see #HeraldHELL) but it would be interesting to hear Powell actually refute the quotes attributed to him. The official response (on Twitter by @HellPizza666) says he is away and cannot therefore comment. Meanwhile, time to promote others and boycott the rather lacklustre fare from Hell Pizzas and its mean marketing muppet. Helluva nice guy ? Nope. Give me Dominos any day.

And the hits just keep on coming …… while the folks at Hell Pizza fiddle, the blogosphere and Facebook are burning ……. more on this story to come. Here is the Facebook page just launched as the story gains more traction :

… and the company’s official Tweeter (@HELLPizza666) pleads for more time to give an answer :

“We’d ask you to reserve judgement until we’re able to get the HELL side of the story into the public arena. Fair? #heraldHELL”

How long does it take ? Can Warren only type with 2 fingers ?

I like how this guy wants to blame everything on one disgruntled ex employee. The real secret is this douche has left a trail of badly burned people in his wake through his dishonest and unethical business practices, any number of people could be behind this.

The $10k he’s ripped Kidscan off is a drop in the ocean.

SimonJuly 25th, 2011 at 1:03 am

Thanks Rodger. I had nothing against this chap or the company but the story caught my attention. Sure business is business – I accept that there is rarely a truly selfless act. But the quoted email, and now your comments, suggest a track record from this guy and I would love to hear more about it. For me, the fact that the company are still dithering over a response to the article and the online criticism speaks volumes……

The Herald and Dominos have not waited long to jump in again 🙂 :

Dominos Pizza Fills Void Left By Hell

I do feel for the franchise owners who are being tarnished by this – people boycotting Hell are forgetting that there are little people out there who are just trying to make an honest living through their franchised business. Unfortunately the figureheads seem to be shitting on them.

RodgerJuly 25th, 2011 at 6:05 am

Fair comment Hugo’s mum, one of the only things saving this band of ratbags that run this franchise business from being totally exposed for the frauds they are is the need to protect the good honest people that own and operate the individual franchise stores – the same people that actually foot the bill for whatever “charities” these guys want to take credit for donating to.

Unfortunately though it would seem like head office have gone a bridge too far, you can only rip people off and ruin them for so long before you come unstuck. There will be a response from them soon no doubt regarding this matter with kidscan, but the long pause speaks volumes to the amount of BS these clowns spout.

Keep buying the pizza, but stay clear of the 3 directors.

Looks like they are keeping their heads down, working under the assumption that this will all blow over as people get bored with the story. Hmmmm……….

Couldn’t agree more, this being the tip of the iceberg is an understatement, I can be the dis gruntled employee if you want, but there are so many, I urge people to come forward with their stories, do not be affraid of this corporate monster/bully, he is nothing & no-one, even hell don’t want to know him anymore…

The ScotsmanMay 8th, 2012 at 7:14 am

What a chump the writer is. If you had done your homework you would have established that the amount discussed was $5k not $10k. Warren was only involved in the initial discussion relating to $5k before passing the implementation to the marketing team and others founders. Kidscan were also retaining 20% of all donations for administration whereas it was agreed that 100% should go to Kidscan. Kidscan failed to deliver live crossovers et al. NZ Herald were fed this story and it appears your just as gullible.
As for Domino’s taking Hell space, it’s clear that you have no idea of Hells market position. Domino competes in hunger buster discount territory whereas Hell is in even take-away meals. If you don’t know the difference go look up QSR. Just go do your homework period.

Thanks Bob. Seems to contradict what was in the press so where do you get your facts from ? Are you a Hells Pizza employee, director or other interested party ? Would love to hear more, despite the somewhat jaundiced view. Perhaps you can back up some of your statements. All the best.

SimonMay 9th, 2012 at 8:21 pm

Oh and Bob …… I should have mentioned. The facts were checked. Despite this being a blog, and the article clearly an opinion piece, I contacted both Kidscan and Hell Pizza about the facts. Considering the slant in your comment, again, I ask you a question : What is your relationship with Warren Powell ? “Chump” ? Hmmmmmmm.

RoseMay 20th, 2012 at 11:37 pm

Good call Simon, The Scotsman is clearly one sided with regards to this story. Regardless if the amount was 5k or 10k, Hells have not fronted up with any! Hells, if you are not going to follow up with your obligations to a charity then dont offer your services!! The Scotsman is under the impression that Hells is untouchable, he needs to come back down to reality and realise that people power is much larger than any company, especially Hells!!! I for one will not be purchasing Hells again and will encourage my family and friends to do the same!!!

SimonMay 21st, 2012 at 6:32 am

Thanks Rose. The ‘net has renewed interest in these stories and I suspect this is because of TVNZ’s Sunday programme which aired yesterday. Unfortunately I did not see it – so will try and catch up using On Demand – but it has propelled Hell Pizza back into the limelight. Seems to me that the comments from the Scotsman are less about opinion and more about rubbishing the original articles – I guess that is serving someone’s agenda (as opposed to being genuine opposition). Shame really as I have no problem with contrary opinions – I just get a tad pissed off with puff !
