Petrolheads looking for additional excitement should check out the Red Bull series – televised occasionally on Channel 4. The shows do lag behind the live events, sadly, and the coverage has been a little childish – Dougie Anderson struggles to provide any serious analysis of, well, anything. Konnie Huq is so out of her depth interviewing the pilots, its hilarious – go back to pop, sweetie.

Poor presenting aside, the sport is great fun and exhilarating to watch. The pilots are more sober personalities than the Formula One primadonnas perhaps, but the skill they demonstrate is phenomenal. This season has seen Brit Paul Bonhomme dominate the championship table but things started going wrong for him in London. With one race remaining – the Perth Air Race on 1st and 2nd November – the young ace, Hannes Arch from Austria, is really on form and leading Paul by 9 points. It will take something special from Paul for the championship to come to the Brit. Fellow Brit Steve Jones is also flying much better in the latter half of the season but has no chance of taking the championship.

Great entertainment and, aside from Channel 4’s variable presentation, the race views broadcast are superb with some great shots in and out of the cockpit. Well worth a gander. Red Bull run one of the better series websites – compared to that for MotoGP and Formula One – which is at http://www.redbullairrace.com/ .
